Lando Norris edged out fellow driver and title rival Oscar Piastri for the fastest time in the final moments of the practice session at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix.

The British racer, who took the points lead from Piastri by just one point after his victory in the Mexican Grand Prix two weeks ago, outpaced the Melbourne-born driver by 0.023 seconds.

Earlier in the session, Oscar Piastri had been the quickest of the McLaren pair for most of the session before sprint qualifying set to begin at the evening session.

The Red Bull star, the sole remaining contender in realistic title contention, lying 36 points behind Norris, was classified in P17 as his Red Bull team opted for a unique setup.

His teammate the Japanese driver was the sole competitor to crash, albeit lightly, when he lost control at corner four during the early running.

The Japanese lost control over the track edges before spinning across the escape zone, and was lucky to escape with just a minor contact of the fence.

The Ferrari of Lewis Hamilton also lost it, at the conclusion of the practice, spinning around through the high-speed Mergulho turn approaching the final bend on to the main straight.

Hamilton ended the session in 19th place, one place behind team-mate the Monegasque driver.

The McLaren pair were far ahead of the rest of the field, with the German's Sauber third fastest, 0.619 seconds off the Australian's time.

Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso was fourth fastest, with the Sauber of Bortoleto fifth from the Mercedes of Russell and the Alpine of Pierre Gasly and the Williams of Sainz.
