The star has handed over the complete sum of his £25,000 Mercury Prize winnings to the trust for venues, which functions to preserve the Britain's small concert spaces.

Fender was awarded the cheque on 16 October as his latest record People Watching was named the best record of the previous year.

He has decided to donate the funds to the Music Venues Trust, in acknowledgment of the vital role local spots fulfilled in his beginning days.

"I wouldn't be doing my current career if it weren't for all the gigs I performed around the North East, and beyond, when I was beginning," stated the artist. "These venues are legendary, but they are struggling."

Since the start of 2023, at least 150 of these venues have permanently closed – approximately 16 percent of the total UK scene.

Recently, major artists including Pulp, the group Coldplay, the singer Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all aided the trust in its attempts to help venues survive, by adding a small levy to their ticket prices, which goes to help independent venues.

Fender also participated, raising more than £100,000 on his 2024 arena tour to assist 38 local spots across Britain.

The donation helped spaces that were facing potential shutdown due to difficulties caused by floods, blazes and personal losses, as well as licensing issues, legal disputes and noise complaints.

Additional spaces obtained funding support in improving amenities and technical equipment that positively impacted artists and fans.

"The concept that money from performances in big venues helps the smaller venues, where it all starts for performers like me, is just logical," Sam Fender has stated.

The musician is not the first artist to give his award funds to charitable organizations.

When the band won the prize in the year 1996 for their release their work, vocalist Jarvis Cocker announced that the band would donate their prize money to the charity the charity.

In 2002, artist the artist shared her bounty among several charities, including the children's charity and a charity for Sickle Cell.

"I also contributed a thousand pounds to the center, to their classes, because I did gymnastics when I was a child and they lacked new equipment," Ms Dynamite explained to outlets.

In recent years, Ezra Collective contributed their winnings to the community center that nurtured their group, as well as other local music groups.

And 1994 winners the group gave their award to a charity for MS after a acquaintance was identified with the condition.

"The victory was quite enough," stated artist the singer. "The money was the cherry on top but we didn't need the cherry, because we had the main prize. So our victory affected somebody else's life."

In the past week, the MVT announced it had protected several local spots in the South East, by placing them under public stewardship.

The first in that area and The Croft in Bristol were acquired under the Own Our Venues initiative, which is funded by a national body and music fans who purchase "shares" in the buildings.
